Recipe FAQs

How does chilling the dough affect the cookies?

Chilling the dough firms it up, making it easier to shape and helping the cookies hold their structure while baking. It also enhances flavor development and contributes to the chewy texture inside.

What causes the crackled sugar exterior?

Rolling the dough balls generously in powdered sugar before baking creates the crackled effect as the cookies expand and bake, leaving distinct fissures in the sugary coating.

Can I substitute vegetable oil with butter?

Yes, butter can be used in place of vegetable oil for a richer flavor and slightly different texture, but it may affect the softness and spread of the cookies.

How do I ensure the cookies remain soft inside?

Baking just until the edges are set and the centers appear slightly underbaked helps maintain a soft and fudgy interior after cooling.

What is the role of cocoa powder in these treats?

Cocoa powder provides the deep chocolate flavor and contributes to the moist, tender crumb and characteristic dark color of these cookies.
